Common Electric & Water Issues

Electric Issues

Wire Down
If you see a downed wire that is not sparking, smoking, or burning and you have not lost power—but have instead lost cable or phone service—please call your cable or telephone service provider. If you are unsure, stay away from the wire.

Loss of Power
If only some of the lights are out, take a look at individual breakers and see if any need to be reset. Please note that any breaks to a property’s meter base or weatherhead are the responsibility of the property owner. If you suspect a problem with either of these, you may want to contact a qualified electrician. View our Preferred Contractor Network for help with scheduling a repair.

Lights Dimming & Flickering
If your lights briefly dim or flicker during or immediately following stormy weather, don’t worry. These incidents are a normal occurrence as OUC’s electrical grid isolates damaged circuits to minimize larger outages. Often, these events involve power lines that have been impacted by high winds, flying debris or vegetation, such as falling trees or tree limbs.

Water Issues

If you suspect a broken line or a leak, you may need to turn off the house valve or close the shut-off valve at the water meter to make repairs.

If you have low pressure or no water at all, check to see if the house valve is all the way open and the shut-off valve at the water meter is open. OUC is responsible for the water mains and service lines up to and including the water meter.

Any leaks or breaks on the house line going from the meter to the structure including irrigation systems, backflow devices, outside hose connections and internal plumbing are the responsibility of the property owner. If you suspect a problem with any of these, you may want to contact a qualified plumber or advanced leak detection specialist. OUC’s Line Clearing Program

OUC trims trees along our distribution lines on a regular maintenance cycle. Trimming is done by trained, highly skilled professionals who use the proper tools and safety practices.

About the Program

We trim only trees on our easements and rights-of-way or trees endangering our power lines and equipment. This work may include the removal of invasive tree species that are less than six inches in diameter and which endanger our facilities.

It may also be necessary to remove an old/dead tree that has become hazard to the public or our electrical system. Please note that OUC does not trim trees that interfere with streetlights.

Customer Notifications

Once a line has come into rotation for regular tree trimming maintenance:

  • OUC will notify you and your neighbors two to three weeks in advance by leaving a notice on your doorknob.
  • As a further service—and at no cost to you—OUC will trim trees that encroach on the service entrance cable to your home.
Free Mulch

While we perform our routine line clearing in your area, you may be eligible to receive free mulch left behind after trimming.

Once our professionals are finished clearing threatening vegetation, they can grind the trimmings into wood chips and make them available to you free of charge. Because the chips are comprised of many different types of trees, they may not add to the aesthetics of your property; however, they can serve other purposes, such as:

  • Reduce soil compaction, which can stunt root growth.
  • Reduce weeds and other invasive vegetation.
  • Return nutrients to your soil through the natural decomposition cycle.
  • Maintain soil temperature and moisture level.

For more about mulch availability, please call (407) 423-9018.
