It’s Electric!
OUC, LYNX Introduce The Bolt To Downtown Orlando

ORLANDO (December 11, 2001)It’s quick, it’s clean, it’s quiet...and it’s free! Introducing The Bolt, an electric bus demonstration project hitting the road Monday, December 17, 2001. The service will run on a 1.6-mile route between downtown Orlando and Thornton Park.

OUC—The Reliable One and LYNX have partnered to bring Orlando its first-ever electric bus — and provide another mode of efficient transportation to workers, shoppers and other downtowners. The Bolt was unveiled at a press conference today at the OUC headquarters on South Orange Avenue.

The purpose of the demonstration project is twofold: To showcase the environmentally friendly aspects of electric bus technology and to provide a boost to the more than 100 retailers, restaurants and businesses along the route.

“We’re excited to bring good, clean electric bus technology to downtown Orlando,” said Bob Haven, OUC’s General Manager & CEO.

“We intend to track ridership closely to determine if there is a need for a permanent east-west downtown circulator system,” said Pat Christiansen, Chairman of the Downtown Development Board. “Eventually, we would like to extend the route westward to Division Street, giving citizens easy access to even more of what downtown Orlando has to offer.”

“Business improves when transportation improves, so this is a demonstration project that the entire region will be watching with interest. We are proud to be involved in this pioneering partnership with OUC,” said Russ Hauck, Chairman of the Board for LYNX.

“The Bolt is a smart, environmentally responsible and useful addition to downtown. Businesses, retailers and restaurants in the downtown core now have a new transportation option,” said Orlando Mayor Glenda E. Hood.

The Bolt will run between Orange Avenue and Summerlin Avenue along Central Boulevard, making 11 stops along the way.

For the demonstration project, EBus Inc. is loaning OUC the 22-passenger electric bus - plus a hybrid electric trolley shortly after the first of the year.

The Bolt demonstration project begins Monday, December 17, 2001 and lasts through March 1, 2002. Bus service will operate every 15 minutes from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and every 8 minutes from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (to accommodate the lunch-time rush).
