OUCooling Takes 1st Place Award OUC's chilled-water business, OUCooling, was honored with the "Gold Medal" in IDEA's District Energy Space category. OUCooling contracted with several new commercial customers in 2001, adding 9 million square feet of customer space — more than twice the space secured by the second-place winner. Among OUCooling's customers in 2001 were the massive Orange County Convention Center and the Mall at Millenia, a 1.1 million-square-foot shopping mall scheduled to open in October 2002. Based in Westborough, Mass., IDEA represents more than 900 district heating and cooling executives, managers, engineers, consultants and equipment suppliers from 20 countries. Its members operate district energy systems owned by utilities, municipalities, hospitals, military bases and airports. "We're pleased to be recognized by IDEA for growing our business as quickly as we have," says Keith Rice, OUC's director of chilled water services. "A key selling point for us has been the fact that OUCooling enables customers to avoid the headaches associated with operating and maintaining their own air-conditioning chillers. Customers can also count on us for reliable, energy-efficient and cost-effective service." OUCooling provides chilled-water service for air-conditioning systems at office buildings, hotels, shopping centers and other commercial properties. It operates a chilled-water "loop" system in downtown Orlando that serves nine large customers, and also operates stand-alone chilled water systems for such clients as the Sheraton Vistana Villages timeshare development in south Orange County. OUC—The Reliable One lives up to its name by providing the best record of electric reliability in the state of Florida and delivering high-quality, great-tasting drinking water to its customers. Established in 1923 and owned by the City of Orlando, OUC serves more than 190,000 customers in Orlando, St. Cloud and parts of unincorporated Orange and Osceola counties.
