OUC Mourns the Passing of CEO Bob Haven

Robert C. "Bob" HavenORLANDO – It is with the deepest sorrow that OUC announces the sudden death of its General Manager & CEO, Robert C. “Bob” Haven.

Mr. Haven passed away Sunday morning, February 29, 2004 at Orlando Regional Healthcare’s Sand Lake Hospital. He was 65.

“On behalf of the employees at OUC, I want to express our deepest sympathies to Mr. Haven’s family,” said Tommy Boroughs, president of OUC’s governing board.

“Bob was a one-of-a-kind leader at work and in the community,” Boroughs said. “He was indeed one of Orlando’s most capable and effective public servants. Above all, Bob was a wonderful friend and mentor to many people inside and outside this company. He will be deeply missed.”

Under Mr. Haven’s leadership, OUC’s electric reliability has been recognized as the best in the Southeastern United States, and its water system has been upgraded to produce some of the nation’s highest-quality drinking water. All the while, OUC has maintained rates among the lowest in the state.

OUC’s governing board plans to meet Tuesday, March 2, to appoint an interim general manager and CEO. “We have a great senior management team in place at OUC,” Boroughs said. “We have total confidence in this group of professionals and expect a smooth transition in leadership.” The board expects to conduct a national search to replace Mr. Haven.

Before joining OUC in July 1994, Haven worked for the City of Orlando for 13 years, first as director of public works and later as chief administrative officer. During his tenure with the city, he oversaw some of Orlando’s largest construction projects, including the Orlando Arena and City Hall. He also developed and implemented numerous public works projects for the city, including Water Conserv I and Water Conserv II, award-winning wastewater reclamation programs.

As a civic leader, Mr. Haven served on the boards of the Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Metropolitan Orlando Urban League and the Orlando Science Center. In 2000, Mr. Haven received the Urban League’s prestigious Willie J. Bruton Award for community service. He also served as president of the Vista Royale Homeowners Association in MetroWest.

A registered professional engineer, Mr. Haven earned a civil engineering degree from George Washington University and also attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Mr. Haven is survived by his wife, Jolynn; two daughters; and three grandchildren.

Established in 1923 and owned by the citizens of Orlando, OUC—The Reliable One provides electric and water services to more than 190,000 customers in Orlando, St. Cloud and parts of unincorporated Orange and Osceola counties. OUC is the second-largest public power utility in Florida.
