OUC Water Named Region’s Best – Again ORLANDO – OUC’s drinking water has been recognized as the best in Central Florida for the second straight year.Water utilities from across the region were invited to participate in the annual “taste test” competition, conducted by the Florida Section of the American Water Works Association (AWWA). AWWA is a nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to safe drinking water. This year and last, judges selected OUC’s water as the best based on taste, clarity, color and smell. “OUC is pleased to accept this award in honor of Bob Haven,” said OUC Director of Water Production Robert Hungate, who picked up the latest award at a ceremony on Tuesday, March 9, 2004. “Mr. Haven played a central role in improving the quality, reliability and safety of Orlando’s drinking water system.” Haven, who passed away suddenly February 29, 2004, was the guiding force behind OUC’s Water Project 2000, which replaced the utility’s older water-treatment plants with new, state-of-the-art facilities. Under Haven’s leadership, OUC began using an ozone-treatment process that produces high-quality, great-tasting tap water proudly dubbed H2OUC. As a strong oxidant, ozone removes smelly hydrogen sulfide and leaves the water with a fresh taste and sparkling appearance. Ozone also reduces the amount of chlorine that must be added to the water, improving the taste even more. Established in 1923 and owned by the citizens of Orlando, OUC—The Reliable One provides electric and water services to more than 190,000 customers in Orlando, St. Cloud and parts of unincorporated Orange and Osceola counties. OUC is the second-largest public power utility in Florida. |
