OUC Details Hurricane Ivan Restoration With Web Log

ORLANDO - For the first time, Central Floridians can experience what it's like to restore power to a hurricane-devastated community with the debut of a Web log from OUC-The Reliable One that features daily updates from our Hurricane Ivan relief crew.

On Friday, Sept. 17, OUC dispatched a five-man, three-truck crew to Opp, Alabama to help its utility crews restore power to more than half of its service area in the dark after Hurricane Ivan. This restoration effort came on the heels of an 11-man, eight-truck convoy OUC sent to Ft. Pierce to help with their storm issues.

But in an innovative attempt to communicate to our customers the difficulties, details and determination it takes to restore power after a hurricane, this crew will file daily updates to a Web log on the homepage of www.ouc.com

The Web log lets users experience the OUC restoration crew's work every step of the way. The team has filed reports from Opp already, and will continue to do so several times a day until they leave later this week.

An entry from Sept. 20 reads:

"Well, guess what?

It's cold!

A cold front moved through and it's in the low 60s right now and we're all a little chilly. We don't really have cold-weather gear with us since no one thought the temperatures would drop like they have.

Cross your fingers that it doesn't get any colder. It's kinda funny, though, since when we were working so hard at this back home for "our" hurricanes, we couldn't believe how hot it was. Now we're working in the cold!"

The log details the impact Ivan had on Opp, how it compares to the Central Florida impact of Charley and Frances, as well as difficulties of working in the aftermath of a hurricane.

The Opp restoration team is OUC employees Orlando Gomez, Victor Mendoza, Raymond O'Neal, Andrew Peaden and Leo Taylor.

When OUC needed help in the days after Hurricanes Charley and Frances, more than 1,000 visiting lineman, tree trimmers and trouble technicians responded to our call - including some from the Opp area. That's why OUC is happy to return the favor.

Established in 1923 and owned by the citizens of Orlando, OUC—The Reliable One provides electric and water services to more than 190,000 customers in Orlando, St. Cloud and parts of unincorporated Orange and Osceola counties. OUC is the second-largest public power utility in Florida.
