OUC Water Lab Earns Recertification;
Ensures Water Meets Highest Standards

OUC The Reliable One operates a state-of-the-art water quality laboratory that recently was awarded a two-year accreditation by National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference (NELAC). The January accreditation followed an on-site assessment by the Florida Department of Health and successful completion of the latest round of proficiency testing.

OUC water lab experts perform more than 20,000 tests each year in order to provide customers with great-tasting, award-winning water.

OUC lab staff performs more than 20,000 chemical and bacteriological tests annually to ensure the quality and safety of OUC’s drinking water. With the latest accreditation, customers can continue to enjoy OUC's award-winning water with confidence, knowing that the water is regularly tested and surpasses the highest quality standards.

“The safety of drinking water is OUC’s highest priority,” General Manager & CEO Ken Ksionek said. “In addition to testing, OUC remains vigilant in monitoring and protecting water facilities with multi-level security procedures and intrusion-detection systems.”

OUC pumped an average of 85.2 million gallons of water per day last year to 127,000 water customers, half of whom live in unincorporated Orange County. Using ozone treatment at eight water treatment plants, OUC produces high-quality, great-tasting tap water proudly dubbed H2OUC. Ozone treatment removes smelly hydrogen sulfide from water and reduces the amount of chlorine that must be added. The result is fresh-tasting water with a sparkling appearance.

In testing water from 10 utilities across the state in 2004, the American Water Works Association judged OUC’s water Florida’s best. The judges tested for taste, color, clarity and odor.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) directs the lab certification program, which includes review of personnel qualifications, on-site assessment, proficiency testing and adherence to quality assurance/quality control standards.

Established in 1923 and owned by the citizens of Orlando, OUC-The Reliable One provides electric and water services to more than 190,000 customers in Orlando, St. Cloud and parts of unincorporated Orange and Osceola counties. In 2004, OUC’s drinking water was named Florida’s best in tests conducted by the Florida section of the American Water Works Association (AWWA). OUC is the second-largest municipal utility in Florida.
