ELECTRIC CREWS HEAD TO KEY WEST TO ASSIST WITH HURRICANE WILMA RESTORATION Convoy of More Than 20 Employees and 15 Trucks Depart Tuesday
ORLANDO -- OUC—The Reliable One sent crews to assist with power restoration in Key West on Tuesday, just a day after completing its own Hurricane Wilma repairs.
A convoy of more than 20 employees and 15 trucks left Orlando about 11 a.m. to make the 10-12 hour drive to Key West. The crews expect to spend at least a week working in the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma, and might stay longer depending on the extent of the damage. All of Key West was without electric service immediately following Hurricane Wilma. Reports also indicate that up to a third of the island was flooded, including the airport and the tourist spot of “The Southernmost Point of the United States.” OUC is assisting Keys Energy Services, a public power utility serving more than 27,000 customers across a 45 square-mile service area in Key West. "Fortunately, Central Florida was spared the brunt of Hurricane Wilma, leaving us in position to help fellow public power utilities in need,” said Ken Ksionek, OUC General Manager and CEO. “As they did here during Central Florida’s trio of 2004 hurricanes, OUC’s crews will work as quickly and safely as possible to help return life to normal for everyone in Key West.” OUC also provided emergency assistance following Hurricane Katrina. On Sept. 9, OUC sent crews of water specialists to Hattiesburg, Miss., to assist with drinking water restoration near the Gulf Coast. Electric crews departed for Gulfport, Miss., on Sept. 11 to help their rebuilding efforts. Fundada en 1923 por una ley especial de la Legislatura de la Florida, OUC—The Reliable One is the second largest municipal utility in Florida. OUC brinda servicios de energía eléctrica y agua a más de 196.000 clientes de Orlando, St. Cloud y de partes no incorporadas de los condados de Orange y Osceola. |
