GOVERNOR BUSH NAMES OUC BOARD PRESIDENT
TO KEY POSITION AT FLORIDA ENERGY FORUM
Tommy Boroughs to Represent Public Power on Crucial Statewide Panel
ORLANDO - OUC—The Reliable
One Board President Tommy Boroughs will serve as the public power representative
at Governor Jeb Bush's 2005 Florida Energy Forum on Dec. 14 in Tallahassee.
Governor Bush proposed the Energy Forum to assist lawmakers in developing a
comprehensive statewide energy plan. The forum will evaluate Florida's current
and future energy supply and demand needs.
A report is scheduled to be issued by Jan. 17, 2006. The list of all the Energy
Forum participants is attached to this release.
In addition to his position as president of the OUC Board, Boroughs is a
recognized national and statewide leader in public power. He is both a strong
advocate for municipal ownership and control of electric utilities and for a
public voice in planning Florida’s energy future.
Earlier this year Boroughs was named Chair of the American Public Power
Association Policy Makers Council.
To maximize the time available, the forum will be facilitated by Janice
Fleischer of FLASH resolutions. Panelists will take part in moderated
discussions regarding the diversification of Florida’s energy supplies, energy
generation, transmission, distribution, security and conservation. The forum
will be broadcast live on the Florida Channel and through the Internet at
www.floridaenergy.org.
OUC, along with Southern Company, has proposed building a first-of-its-kind
Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle plant. The project is an example of the
innovative thinking Florida needs to develop a reliable and affordable supply of
energy to match expected population growth.
Boroughs was appointed to the OUC board in January 2001 and is serving his
second term as president. In his role as Chair of the APPA Policy Makers
Council, Boroughs also serves as an ex-officio member of the APPA Board of
Directors. The Washington, D.C.-based council promotes federal legislation of
importance to public power and provides advice on a broad range of issues to
APPA.
Boroughs is a partner in the Orlando law office of Holland & Knight, focusing
his practice in the areas of zoning and land use regulatory matters together
with real estate acquisition and sales. He also serves as Chairman of the firm’s
Florida Land Use Team.
